So I am writing a book, I think. Wait, let me rephrase. I am trying to write a book. This whole experience is so damn daunting I feel like crack head going through withdrawals. But I have an plethora of information at my fingertips just waiting to be utilized. Where did I get all this info you ask?
I read a few blogs that have advice and such on writing. Let’s rate them shall we?
http://www.rachelhigginson.com gets a 4 out of 5 stars
This site is on my top list for writing tips and tricks. It has nothing to do with the fact that I am a huge fan and have read all her works.
She has lots of fairly detailed info regarding the process in laymans terms on how to start writing and finding betas and what to look forward to when publishing. And I like how she writes. It is simple and elegant without making me feel like a tiny fish in a big pond. The website is user friendly and it easy on the eyes. And by that I mean there are not a lot of flashy pics and buttons to detract from the content. I like the structure and simplicity.
Hmmm maybe I have ADHD. Oh well, moving on.
http://www.shewrites.com gets a 3 out of 5 stars
This site differs in A LOT of ways from the previous one because it allows you to be extremely interactive, which is really quite cool. I have my own page and blog along with lots of groups and articles for me to access on all topics ranging from publishing and editing to sharing with other authors and group chats. You can advertise with them and they offer a ton of services such as writing coaching, website assistance and editing just to name a few. They also have forums to go to and even videos to see about trailers and such. The main reason I didn’t give this one 4 stars is because I feel like it is too big. They have an enourmous amount of information making it not easy to navigate. The amount of is just cataclysmic. I could never filter through it all. It just keeps goiong and going. There is no end. It makes it tough to for me to keep up with it all. Another plus? It’s all about the women here folks. For the women and by the women which pulls at my ovaries in a good way. 🙂
Next up http://www.thepassivevoice.com. He gets 2 out fo 5 stars.
I get loads of e-mails from this site. He is a lawyer but he doesn’t give legal advice on his site. Most of his posts refer to the difference between traditional publishing and self-publishing along with referencing other books and newspapers thrown in as well. This site is easy to navigate, but I find myself really just glancing at it without reading the whole thing. It has some diamonds in the rough but not enough for me to fully commit to following as much as I do the other sites.
And who can forget http://www.goodreads.com. This one is a whopping 5 out of 5 stars
I love this site! It puts almost everything at my fingertips with regards to writing. I have a blog and am part of a creative writing group here as well. (not that I even know what to do with that) I can follow my favorite authors as well and rate their books along with having loads of friends to compare and contrast reviews with. You can also put your writing out there for others to read and comment on which I love. Now this site is really geared to readers but I have found you can find betas and also ask your favorite writers questions if you are that bold. Which I am. You should really try it.
Now these sites aren’t really for tips of writing and publishing but more on the support side. I will not be rating them since I have not used their services yet.
http://www.guru.com is a site for finding free lancers to help with just about everything. It’s a global network that you can search to find an editor or cover artist or anything else really. It is not solely about writing which is why I love it so much.
http://www.99designs.com is cool to look through. It is a site filled with everything and anything to do with illistration. From web design to clothing and books this site has loads of stuff to help with all your branding needs.
For me research is key in any endeaver you want to start. These are just a few places I like to reference when I need some guidance.
So now that I have shown you mine, it’s time for you to show me yours. 🙂
I am always on the lookout for a great site to check out. Feel free to comment and let me know what you guys use.
Till next time……..
